Following recent Hamas attacks on Israel, social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has removed hundreds of accounts linked to Hamas, saying there is "no place on X for terrorist organizations".
Linda Yaccarino, CEO of the social media platform X, said that: “X is committed to serving the public conversation, especially at such critical moments, and understands the importance of addressing any illegal content being disseminated through the platform. There is no space and we will continue to remove such accounts in real time, including active groups."
The action by X was inspired by a 24-hour ultimatum issued to Elon Musk by EU industry chief Thierry Breton.
Thierry Breton had expressed concern over the alleged use of the platform to distribute illegal content and misinformation within the EU.
Under the newly implemented EU Digital Services Act (DSA), large online platforms like X and Meta's Facebook are required to take more proactive measures to remove illegal content and address threats to public safety and civil discourse.
Linda Yaccarino further stated that following the attack, X convened a leadership group to immediately assess the situation.
In a letter addressed to Thierry Breton, Linda Yaccarino expressed X's desire to engage further with the EU and his team, including holding a meeting to address any specific concerns.
